"Or to kill men with," rejoined Jen, ironically; "or to drug the watchers of the dead." Dr. Etwald went home with this sum running in his head, and more than ever he resolved to marry Isabella. He was in love with her, and would have taken her without a penny; but all the same, if she was an heiress in a small way, it was all the better. The doctor was clever but poor, and with an income like that he could move to London and do great things. It was of lawn as transparent as a cobweb, real lace and tiny delicious incrustations of embroidery. It fitted in lines that melted into curves, had enticements in the shape of a long sash and a dazzling breast-knot of shimmery blue, the colour of my eyes, and I looked new-born in it. "Mean!" cried Jen, in a tone of conviction. "Why! that Etwald is mixed up in this business also!" "The devil-stick!" gasped Jen, pointing a shaking finger at the wall. "The devil-stick!" "Assuredly. You loved Maurice--".
